Built in 1474 by the legendary chieftain Red Hugh O’Donnell, this fortress was home to one of the most influential Gaelic families in Ireland, famously holding out against English forces during the Nine Years’ War.

Inside, you can wander through the fully restored stone tower house, marvel at the massive fireplaces, and stand in the grand banqueting hall.

If you pass through in October like we did, the afternoon light cutting through the old stone arches gives it a beautifully haunting, Samhain-style atmosphere—and it offers incredible views of the rugged coastline and the Donegal Pier before you hop back in the car.
